Regional Council of Bretagne
Region Bretagne, located on the Atlantic coast of France, is a leading hub for marine biotechnology, harnessing its rich natural resources and long-standing expertise in sustainable development. With 2,730 km of coastline, abundant seaweed resources, and extensive marine protected areas, the region has cultivated a thriving economy centered around marine biotech. It is home to more than 400 biotech companies across the cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical sectors. Supported by a robust network of research centers and innovation hubs, including Biotech Santé Bretagne, the region continues to drive innovation, particularly in sustainable and marine-based biotechnologies. Bretagne is also at the forefront of the cosmetics industry, especially in marine cosmetics, where its wealth of marine resources and advanced biotechnology play a pivotal role. With over 120 companies specializing in cosmetic biotech, the region is committed to sustainability and natural ingredient innovation, particularly using marine-derived materials like seaweed. Bretagne’s thriving ecosystem, characterized by collaboration between research institutions, cutting-edge technology platforms, and industry partners, is further strengthened by initiatives like the Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) for cosmetics. This strategy promotes the production of eco-certified products, reduces environmental impacts, and advances innovations in marine cosmetic ingredients, solidifying Bretagne’s position as a national and international hub for sustainable, forward-thinking cosmetics.
